Why should I choose to follow God?
Perhaps you should first acknowledge you haven't chosen to follow God but have done what you have wanted to. The ten commandments reveal the life and attitudes He requires. They are summed up by two commandments: 'love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength' and 'love your neighbor as yourself'. Have you kept these consistently, perfectly and whole-heartedly (be honest!)? No one has. We have broken them by what we have thought, said, done and by what we have neglected to do. This is called sin. God is completely just and demands sinners to be punished. The penalty for sin is death: the death of our earthly bodies and eternal punishment in hell. We not only have a problem - we are the problem: by nature our minds are selfish and rebel against God's commands. Our sin separates us from God and grieve Him.
